Crossway Interview on Chosen for Life (2)

May 28, 2007

Crossway: Is there a particular event or situation that motivated you to write about divine election?

There wasn't any particular event but rather two concerns that led me to write it. First, I'm persuaded that only the doctrine of unconditional election preserves the integrity of divine grace in the salvation of souls. I'll say more about that later. Closely related to this is the fact that, in my opinion, God is not truly honored and exalted and treasured if his absolute and unconditional sovereignty in the salvation of souls is not affirmed. In other words, the doctrine of unconditional election and related issues of divine sovereignty in salvation alone preserve the centrality and supremacy of God in all of life.

I can't let this question pass without one more comment. The bottom line is that I wrote this book on election because I am honestly convinced that it is what the Bible teaches, and we can never grow in our relationship with Christ or properly prize him above all else if we ignore the whole counsel of God concerning how he saves a human soul.
